Call for photos and illustrations (#L3T)

We are caling for pictures and illustrations for each chapter of our textbook-project “Teaching and Learning with Technologies” (L3T). Therefore we started a Flickr-group a couple of months ago, where we are asking for appropriate pictures under a creative-commons licenses. Please become a member and share your photos with an exciting community on Technology Enhanced Learning.

A general introduction of the project in English:

Aufruf für Einreichungen: Bild, Bildung und Erziehung

Dr. phil. Olaf Dörner und Prof. Dr. Burkhard Schäffer (beide Universität der Bundeswehr München) erbitten Beiträge zum Schwerpunkt “Bildung, Bildung und Erziehung” für die Ausgabe 2/2010 der bildungsforschung. Abgabetermin ist der 1. September 2010.

Call for Papers: Computer-based Knowledge & Skill Assessment and Feedback in Learning Settings (CAF 2009)

CAF 2009 – 23. – 24. September 2009 – Villach, Austria

Second Special Track on

Computer-based Knowledge & Skill Assessment and Feedback in Learning Settings (CAF) http://www.iicm.edu/CAF2009

This special track will take place during ICL 2009 in Villach, Austria (23-25 September 2009) as a special programme item.

The Special Track CAF 2009 provides an interdisciplinary forum for international scientists and practitioners to discuss various aspects of computer-based knowledge & skill assessment in learning settings and based on that feedback provision for students and teachers.

The International Conference on Interactive Computer aided Learning (ICL) is an interdisciplinary conference which aims to focus on the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences in interactive computer aided learning.

Background

Our modern life at the beginning of the 21st century is strongly influenced by effects such as rapidly changing and developing information, technology-enhanced communication and information access, and new forms of production and services in a globalized world. This situation requires individuals to adapt their skills and competencies. Consequently, educational objectives and societal expectations have changed significantly in recent years. Modern learning settings must consider learning community aspects as well as learner-centered, knowledge-centered and assessment-centered aspects.

By focusing on the assessment, this concept can be further distinguished in (1) summative assessment, performed at the end of a set of learning activities, and (2) formative assessment, which is intended to give continuous feedback to students and teachers. The latter mentioned formative assessment gives information about the current state of knowledge and/or the degree of knowledge acquisition within learning activities.

Assessment is an important component of modern teaching and learning processes in face-to-face courses as well as in e-learning environments; it provides valuable feedback to teachers and students which allows the revision and adaptation of teaching and learning activities. Furthermore, assessment activities and results can also be utilized for building and strengthening metacognitive skills. However, continuous and frequent assessment in learning processes may cause excessive efforts and costs. Therefore, computer-assisted assessment systems (CaAS) and computer-based assessment systems (CbAS) have become of increasing interest over the years. Assessment systems may support parts or the entire chain of the assessment lifecycle. This lifecycle includes authoring and management of assessment items, compilation of specific tests, performance of assessments, and compilation and management results. Additionally, emerging interest in the sharing and re-use of assessment items or compiled assessment tests and the exchangeability of assessment outcomes has resulted in standardization efforts, such as the IMS Question & Test Interoperability Specification (IMS QTI).

The special track will bring together international researchers as well as practitioners from different organisations who will have plenty of time for networking and real-world knowledge sharing.

CAF is interested in novel scientific research, findings from experiments and results form real-life applications. We invite submissions that deal with issues including, but not limited to:

• Aspects of formative and summative assessment
• History and challenges of e-assessment
• Computer-supported assessment rubric
• Computer-based knowledge & skill assessment for individuals and groups
• Computer-supported peer assessment for individuals and groups
• Computer-supported self-assessment and group assessment

Call for Papers: Mashups for Learning (MASHL2009)

logo_mashl2009_300ptMartin Ebner and I kindly ask for contributions to a special track within the ICL conference in Villach, AT (23-25 September 2009): The MASHL2009 deals with “Mashups for Learning”.

The special track “Mashups for Learning” (MASHL2009) takes place within the “International Conference on Interactive Computer Aided Learning” in Villach, Austria. For the interdisciplinary MASHL2009 we ask for contributions on “Mashups for Learning” to foster the exchange of innovative approaches and research results:

Wikis, Weblogs, media portals (such as FlickR or YouTube) as well as social networking sites (such as MySpace or LinkedIn) offer various (learning) opportunities. These are not always easy to handle and organise. Web-based mashups merge data and/or functionalities from different Web sources. An example for mashups for learners are Personal Learning Environments (PLEs). Various prototypes and tools try to support communities of practice and learners by effectively combining resources. Additionally, smart applications are developed to add filtering and recommender systems, reputation systems, engagement indicators, personalisation opportunities or quality assurance concepts to support learning within the Web 2.0.

In this special track we want to bring together new and innovative approaches, applications and experiences with mashups for learners, utilising Web 2.0 applications. Contributions can focus on, but are not limited to, one of the following topics:

  • Personal Learning Environments as well as support of communities of learners
  • New concepts and tools of mashups for learning
  • Technical solutions and working examples for mashups
  • Studies on experiences and evaluation of mashups for learning
  • Conceptual design and studies on specific aspects, such as recommendation or reputation systems for mashups
  • Current and future developments concerning technology and pedagogy

Background

Our society of the 21st century makes great demands on its members caused by rapid developing and ever-changing political, social, economical and technological situations. Consequently, it is expected that members of the society keep pace with these mutable situations, adapt their skills and expertise. As a result, modern instructional design, learning goals and processes as well as appropriate learning environments must support the development of the aforementioned skills and expertises. Consequently, educational approaches have changed dramatically over time from less formal schooling in the agrarian society to remedial repetitive learning in the industrialization age to learning with an understanding in today’s knowledge society. Based on that, different modern educational strategies have been developed which includes aspects such as self-directed learning, collaborative learning, experiential-based learning and actively participating. Educational approaches have also been influenced by technology but have also increasingly applied technology over the last decades, such as motion pictures, radio, television, computers and other emerging information and communication technologies (ICT).

Last year’s hype surrounding the virtual world “Second Life” has also generated significant interest in the education community. Although virtual worlds have been an active research topic for a long time, technology was not ready for complex application scenarios since recent years. New interesting and powerful platforms and tools, such as Second Life, Active Worlds, Multiverse, Open Croquet, OpenSim and Sun’s 3D Wonderland, have been emerged applicable to complement or even replace other knowledge transfer and learning settings. Modern virtual worlds are seen from an optimistic viewpoint as a disruptive and transformative technology. However, it still remains unclear to some extent where the real benefits and limitations of using virtual worlds as knowledge transfer and learning environments are when compared to more traditional methods. In order to avoid the same pitfalls of past e-learning solutions by just applying traditional learning approaches to a new technology, this special track is indented to offer a multidisciplinary platform which brings together international researchers from different organizations in order to share their experience with this technology.
